[edit] Overview

This is a Test page. Go to http://en.wikipedia.com/wiki/ for more info!

[edit] Completely useless

Quote from Main Page: "Changes to the code will generally appear here a few minutes before they appear on the rest of the Wikimedia wikis." So what? Users shall know when there is a change in the code, then have a few minutes time to test it here, then have to hurry to report a bug (perhaps with only a few seconds left) to avoid having a buggy version at Wikipedia? Changes should be at least tested some days, not only a few minutes. --84.60.253.157 16:47, 18 June 2006 (UTC)

Users don't test changes here, developers do. The Wikimedia setup is different to any development system we have, and some differences are subtle and hard to reproduce. Developers should test changes here before they sync the files and affect the rest of the wikis. -- Tim Starling 12:19, 2 July 2006 (UTC)
I agree that "a few minutes" is misleading, though-- I'm sure it's a bit longer than this. Perhaps it should be changed to "a short time"? Dar-Ape 04:14, 6 March 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Link Here

Is there any way to link to here from another wiki? For example, if I want to link to the latin wikibooks I can type b:la: (which produces b:la:). However, typing w:test doesn't seem to work (w:test:). -Daniel (m:User:Dbmag9)

Looks like 'Test' should work. See this page http://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Interwiki_map - m:User:Harry Wood 23:11, 29 July 2006 (UTC)
It still doesn't, I'm afraid. —Nightstallion (?) 19:45, 31 July 2006 (UTC)
Yes it doesn't work. Matthew hk 06:57, 8 August 2006 (UTC)

You're not supposed to link here. It's not a production site, it's not a site which the public need to know about in general. If, for some ridiculous reason, you have to, use a normal URL. Rob Church 15:18, 9 August 2006 (UTC)

You can interwiki test now Use "testwiki:" and you're good to go. Koavf 04:22, 21 August 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Community Portal

Is there going to be some kind of community portal thing going on here? I know there isn't really a community, but there should be somewhere other than here where people can put forward questions, and get an explanation of this site. Dbmag9 16:11, 9 July 2006 (UTC)

I concur. —Nightstallion (?) 19:45, 31 July 2006 (UTC)
Now open, the Community Portal! Timrem (talkcontribs) 18:18, 1 August 2006 (UTC)
Can a link to the new communty portal be put on the left side navigation, where people can easily find it, like it is on the other wikis?--67.169.212.172 04:25, 9 August 2006 (UTC)
Who deleted it? Why? Where are we to find the voting results now? 141.153.155.88 17:30, 9 August 2006 (UTC)
It seems that Rob Church deleted it. I would ask him to restore it, BUT he's really really pissed at Wikimedia right now. So can any admins please restore it? --LBMixPro <Speak|On|It> 03:53, 11 August 2006 (UTC)
It's not red-linked anymore, but the previous content is gone. Can it be restored? --67.169.212.172 03:29, 13 August 2006 (UTC)
No need, the voting results have been restored, and there isn't really supposed to be a Community here, anyway. Timrem (talkcontribs) 20:54, 4 September 2006 (UTC)

[edit] TP?

How to test without Template? Matthew hk 06:54, 8 August 2006 (UTC)

Make your own, if that's what you mean, and if you're still here. Stalin.PoG 06:30, 1 September 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Error?

Sorry if someone answered me, but Wikipedia:Community Portal was erased and my question with its possible answer is lost. However...

I do not know if it's an error or not, but in the Test Wikipedia I could check comments in subpages talks are not noticed like in user pages:

You have new messages (differences in last edit)

Something similar. When adding a comment in a subpage like "User Talk:Foo/Test", Foo has not any message when logging in.

I also want to say I created a guest account, to let unregistered users experiment editing, moving, button bar... with same purposals that es:Usuario:Invitado (pybalo) (which is not mine, is from Pybalo) and maybe some more, like talk editings (I needed two accounts to do that test). If it causes any annoyance, you can block it and refer to me. Thank you.--Nethac DIU 21:36, 10 August 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Administration

How do you become an admin on this Wikipedia? --Gray Porpoise 13:03, 12 August 2006 (UTC)

You list your name at Wikipedia:Requests for permissions, that's how. --Gray Porpoise 17:43, 13 August 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Favicon.ico change?

Kudos on the logo, very recognizable, both for what it is and what it is not. Could the w:favicon also be changed to a negative image? Almost did a Bad Thing(tm) and edited on the wrong site. Sure, I could have looked at the gigantic 155x135 logo, but no, I was fixed on the 16x16 one as I flipped thru my Firefox tabs. :) A sample is here, but it wouldn't let me upload an .ico file. — MrDolomite | Talk 04:14, 29 August 2006 (UTC)

We already use that favicon for the secure server. I don't really think a favicon change is worth the effort (a server admin needs to do it, I think). --james(talk) 12:00, 29 August 2006 (UTC)
Thanks, I had no idea there was a secure server for wikipedia, let alone that it used that icon. :) With that being the case, I was going to use secure server for test to help me self-disambiguate, but it turns out there isn't one for test.  :(  — MrDolomite | Talk 16:14, 29 August 2006 (UTC)
Are you sure? Then what is this? Timrem (talkcontribs) 23:24, 30 August 2006 (UTC)
Aha, what a difference having the correct URL makes. :) Thx — MrDolomite | Talk 03:29, 3 September 2006 (UTC)

Insert eye-rolling remarks here. robchurch | talk 02:32, 30 August 2006 (UTC)

Just use the current logo as the favicon. --Cat out@ 02:38, 5 September 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Test pages

there are countless test pages out there (created by bots and etc), should they be deleted? --Cat out@ 00:24, 2 September 2006 (UTC)

Quote from Tim Starling "It's a waste of time and effort to delete a page on a test wiki, unless you happen to be testing deletion." Timrem (talkcontribs) 01:49, 2 September 2006 (UTC)
True I suppose. However people really should be testing on existing pages and not random sakjaskjf's... :/ --Cat out@ 02:08, 2 September 2006 (UTC)
The again I dont really care. :) --Cat out@ 02:40, 5 September 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Strange code

Why nowiki tags generate a code like UNIQ3122384d20612827-nowiki-00000001-QINU?--Nethac DIU 11:01, 22 October 2006 (UTC)

This will occur on any page using {{DISPLAYTITLE:Some title}}. I think it's a bug in a possible future update which allows a page to be found at one location but be titled something else. Timrem (talkcontribs) 18:55, 24 October 2006 (UTC)
Oh. Thank you.
And yes, DISPLAYTITLE changes the visible title with no changing the URL direction. I saw it before - I don't know why it fails now. The header of this page, with DISPLAYTITLE would be:

[edit] Some title

<h1>Some title</h1> (*)

Link to this page as [[Talk:Main Page]]

With the grey warning just under the title, I don't know how did that space appear.--Nethac DIU 16:06, 30 October 2006 (UTC)

*Editing note: Original header converted to text, as it was causing Contents to be misnumbered.

[edit] Where is the main page/village pump etc?

eh? Testing man 20:05, 9 December 2006 (UTC)

The Main Page is here (for a better version, see here), and there is no village pump because this is more a place for developers to test changes to the MediaWiki software than it is a community of any sort (see WP:NOT). Timrem (talkcontribs) 04:59, 10 December 2006 (UTC)

[edit] question

So is this wiki for test editing? Jj137 01:42, 11 November 2007 (UTC)

No, this wiki is for Developers to test their PHP code without breaking all the Wikimedia wikis. --Cmelbye (talk) 00:26, 23 January 2008 (UTC)
So, that means something? Akira-otomo (talk) 20:08, 8 March 2008 (UTC)
Yeah, it does :) It will take too long to explain though ;p If you're looking to edit articles, etc..., then you may wish to visit a Wikipedia instead. AGK (talk) 23:16, 8 March 2008 (UTC)

Yeah, about that -- this guy got me blocked on Wikipedia. Akira-otomo (talk) 14:07, 9 March 2008 (UTC)

Unfortunately, the Test Wiki has no influence nor activity on/in matters on sister projects. If you wish to be unblocked on that project, you must follow the block appeals system on that project. AGK (talk) 16:16, 9 March 2008 (UTC)
Yeah, I know. But I thinki I've cracked what this is all about; is it to see if you want the WikiMedia Software or if you should upgrade or something? Akira-otomo (talk) 16:07, 10 March 2008 (UTC)
The people who develop the MediaWiki software test out code here instead of on, say, Wikipedia. If they break anything here, it's no big deal, whereas if they take the #9 most popular website offline because they broke it, that's a big deal. Regular editors and readers really have no need to edit here at all. It's not to test bots, not to test sysop tools, nor to develop articles on. Kylu 05:18, 18 March 2008 (UTC)

I propose we merge Wikipedia:What Test Wiki is not, Wikipedia:Administrators, and Wikipedia:Bureaucrats with the main page.--Emmette Hernandez Coleman (talk) 02:15, 10 August 2009 (UTC)

My reasoning behind this is
  • All 3 pages are short enough, and will probably not get much bigger
  • "What test wiki is" is listed on the main page
  • This would increase their visibility, which is especially important with "what test wiki is not".
  • There's no reason not to, or at least none that I can think of.
